G2 Research RIP 9mm ammo is available for sale at Omaha Outdoors for those who have their own ideas about carry ammunition and want something outside the recommended parameters established by federal law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, which has conducted extensive terminal ballistics testing in the wake of high profile gunfights.
G2 Research's newest products are the VIP solid copper tracer bullets, with tiny engraved happy faces on the nose of the projectile, available in 9mm and 45 ACP as well as the Telos solid copper fragmenting self defense projectile in 38 Special, 380 ACP, 9mm, 357 Magnum, 45 Colt, and 45 ACP and their Civic Duty solid copper hollow point (SCHP). The VIP bullets offer a low heat low light tracer effect visible in darkness, making range day fun for everyone without literally burning down the house. Telos offers fragmenting performance and reduced penetration compared to other solid copper defense loads, which may be desirable to some. G2 Research Civic Duty is a more traditional solid copper hollow point which should perform similarly to other such bullets, with the added benefits of G2 Research delivering velocities consistently at or above their quoted velocity for a given load.
As pistol ammunition development has advanced in recent decades, the FBI switched back from 40 S&W to 9mm, saying that any minor differences in effectiveness between the two were offset by 9mm being easier to shoot and offering a higher magazine capacity. Those minor differences in effectiveness have shrunk precipitously with the introduction of modern jacketed hollowpoints that offer consistent penetration and expansion performance through a variety of barriers such as auto glass and heavy clothing, which often proved problematic for early hollowpoint designs.
G2 Research, with their solid copper projectile RIP (Radically Invasive Projectile) line, takes a different approach. Rather than try to keep the bullet together through a barrier all the way to the point when it stops moving, they want small shards, components they refer to as trocars, of the bullet to go in various directions immediately upon penetration while a smaller, non-expanding portion continues deeper into the target.
G2 says of the trocar design: “The acoustic wave that is imparted into the intended target is sent along predictable vectors. This action creates an ease of entry by reducing the acceleration at the point of impact allowing potential energy to be conserved, thus transferring a devastating kinetic energy wave. The result is a high level of accuracy and repeatability... where it counts.”
Due to the unique shape of the RIP projectile potentially reducing compatibility with some firearms, and because it's just a good idea with any ammo, shooters are encouraged to fire a comfortable amount of RIP loads through their carry gun before depending on it for duty or carry use.
