FIME Group firearms at Omaha Outdoors have always represented some of the most sought-after imported rifles and pistols from Eastern Europe. As import laws and regulations are constantly changing, mostly for the worse if you’re a gun owner, the FIME Group online catalog has in the past included rifles and shotguns from Russia like the Molot Vepr shotgun. The VEPR AK47 / AK74, and the FIME Group SGL21, but some of these options are no longer available.
Better Than a Sig Sauer? The Rex Zero 1
The biggest news from FIME Group is their importation of the Arex REX Zero 1 pistol from Slovenia. Slovenia is a former communist country bordering Italy which was never part of the Warsaw Pact, nor was its former parent country Yugoslavia. Slovenia has been a member of NATO since 2004, and it’s no surprise that the country would have a strong domestic firearms manufacturing capability – in this case, the Arex company.
Their flagship product is the FIME Group Rex Zero for sale at Omaha Outdoors, something which may appear to you as very similar to a Sig P226 or P229, but the design has been radically altered and improved to meet the needs of 21st-century pistol shooters. A magazine capacity of 18 rounds in the full-size model and 15 rounds in the compact is a definite step up, while premium materials and processes have been used throughout including a hard coat anodized 7075-T6 aluminum frame. The magazine release is ambidextrous, and so is the safety.
Yes, unlike a decocker-only P226, the Arex Rex Zero 1 features not only a decocker (which doubles as a slide stop) but also a thumb safety which can be engaged with the hammer down or in the cocked position. Thus, you can carry the Rex pistol safety off hammer down, just the way you would have carried a P226, or you can engage the safety with the hammer cocked so as to carry “cocked and locked” in single action mode, or you can enjoy the ultimate series of obstacles to unwanted firing by carrying with the hammer down and the safety on. No trigger pull is necessary to remove the slide, which is machined from solid bar stock. Frames are available anodized in Graphite Black, Foliage Green, and Flat Dark Earth or with a nickel-plated frame, and nickel-plated slides are available with any frame color.
There are three sizes – Standard, Combat, and Compact. Standard has a 5.5” height and a 4.25” barrel for an overall length of 7.5”. Standard and Combat have the same full-length frame and 5.5” overall height, while Combat and Compact have the same shortened slide with a 3.85” barrel for a 7.1” length. Compact combines the shorter slide and 3.85” barrel of the Combat with a shortened grip for an overall height of 5.1”. Despite its reduced size which is very similar to that of a P228 or P229, the Compact (Rex Zero 1CP) carries two extra rounds compared to its Sig counterpart.
All models feature a Picatinny rail on the dust cover and three-dot white sights, but now Trijicon night sights are available. The new Zero 1T model has tall sights and a threaded 4.9” barrel along with the ROR (Rex Optics Ready) slide which has four interchangeable plates for mounting Trijicon, C-More, Shield / Jpoint, and EOTech / Vortex / Burris / Docter / Insight / Meopta micro red dot sights.
