For many shooters, the AR-15 is one of the most trusted rifles in their arsenal. Whether it is for home defense, competition, target practice, duty use, or anything else, many have come to know this platform more intimately than any other. This is largely attributed to the fact that the weapon is so easy to customize, leading many to build their own project ARs. Of course, while project rifles are popular, some shooters just want to be able to order their new gun and use it right out of the box. Springfield’s new Saint Rifle is teasing that it might offer just that.
Another New AR Design?
OK, let’s just say what everyone is thinking: is a new AR really worth covering? The truth is, while the AR platform is one of the most enjoyable to work with, most companies have already released their own variants at this point. While you might still get some satisfaction building your own, how often do you really find a mass-production model that stands out from the crowd? Though we won’t be able to judge for sure until we get our hands on it, Springfield is claiming that is “the ultimate refinement of the AR-15 form,” so we do feel it is worth exploring.
Looking Over the Springfield Armory Saint
At first glance, the Saint has an impressive list of features. Starting with the standard 5.56 NATO chambering, it a 16-inch chrome moly vanadium barrel with a 1:8 twist. It’s flattop rail includes a flip-up rear and fixed A2 front sight, as well as room for mounting your own optics. Outfitted with a PKMT KeyMod handguard and pistol grip, customization and ergonomics should be more than adequate. It also utilizes Bravo Company components, including a rattle-free buttstock. Add in the M16 bolt carrier group (BCG), mid-length gas system, and a trigger polished with nickel boron, and you have a feature-rich rifle.
While these features are definitely impressive, it’s the price tag that really catches our eyes. In fact, the MSRP for this new rifle is a mere $899. In most cases, this is what you will spend on a budget rifle and while the Saint may not compete with high-end competition models, it definitely seems well-fit for tactical applications, which should land it as one of the most well-priced ARs on the market today.
Will It Deliver?
While the specifications might sound good, one has to always wonder whether or not a new AR design is really what the market needs. As mentioned previously, the market is already permeated with this design, which makes standing out from the crowd that much more difficult. Of course, with a name like Springfield backing it, we are hopeful that it will stand up to the test of time. Since they are using the slogan “the ultimate refinement of the AR-15 form,” we can only hope that they will stand behind these words.
