While the young hunter might not fully appreciate it, the truth is that the caliber you choose to hunt with says a lot about the type of prey you are after. Everyone knows that you don’t go squirrel hunting with a .30-06 or go looking for bears with a .22 LR, but the truth is that everything in between can have a good impact on what you hunt. Perhaps you found that the .243 Win cartridge is perfect for taking down wild hogs, but you prefer a larger cartridge for prey like elk or moose.
Among the different animals that people hunt in the country today, the whitetail deer is one of the most common prey. Of course, there are many different calibers that will effectively ensure you can take down one of these deer, which leaves the modern hunter with plenty of different options to take into the field. Chambered in the powerful and reliable 7.62x39mm cartridge, the Ruger Mini-30 could be the perfect option to take on your next hunt. Its solid platform and great ballistic performance help it to stand out from the crowd, offering you everything you need to succeed.
The Perfect Model for Hunting
Though the 7.62x39mm cartridge certainly works well for hunting, the Ruger Mini-30 was also made to appeal to those on a ranch and those who just want a good target model. With that in mind, it uses a variety of helpful features to make sure you can perform at your best. To begin with, you can enjoy the cold hammer-forged barrel, which offers ultra-precise rifling and provides some of the easiest cleaning available. The Garand-style action is ultra-rugged and the self-cleaning moving gas cylinder allows it to put up with a lot of stressful environmental conditions. With its included front blade sight and ghost ring rear, you can get great accuracy right out of the box. Despite this, Ruger also understands that you might prefer a scope, which is why it ships with scope rings and an integrated system that provides the most stable mounting platform directly on the receiver. Finally, the receiver is drilled and tapped for mounting a picatinny rail, which is also included.
Ruger Mini-30 Specs
All Mini-30 rifles use a black synthetic stock and come chambered in 7.62x39mm. They are available with either a 5-round or 20-round magazine standard. If you choose the 20-round magazine model, you can opt for a matte or blued finish, while the 5-round is offered only in matte. The basic model is outfitted with an 18.5” barrel with 6 grooves and a 1:10 right hand twist, which Ruger believes gives the best accuracy for this round. It measures out to be 37.5” overall and weighs in at 6.7 pounds. Alternatively, you can also select the 16.12” barrel option, which also weighs 6.7 pounds, but only reaches an overall length of 36.75”.
Selecting the Right Option
While the compact size of the Mini-30 makes it a popular option for those hunting whitetail deer or similarly-sized prey, you don’t have to settle for the basic configuration. If magazine capacity is a concern, you might prefer to look at the 20-round model instead, which uses the same features, but offers a larger standard magazine. Alternatively, you might want a shorter barrel and opt for the 16.12” barrel configuration instead. Also keep in mind that the Mini-30 is actually a sub-model of the Ruger Mini-14, so you may want to consider one of those as well.
