Hunting is one of the most rewarding sports and it is accordingly one of the most difficult. Learning to become a skilled hunter takes years and plenty of practice. In many cases, you find that you must focus on one particular prey first, learning to take your time and understand the right approach. Once you master one, you cannot wait to start taking on another. Despite the thrill you get from the hunt and the skill that you develop, there is one factor that can make a big difference: the rifle you use. A good hunting rifle can really improve your game and ensure that you have the most success on all of your outings.
Just like any other firearm in your collection, it is important that you pay close attention when you are selecting a good hunting rifle. You want a weapon that provides easy operations, as well as one designed to stand up to the conditions you might encounter out in the bush. Perhaps more important than anything else though, you want to make sure you can hit your mark with the first shot you take, as you might not get another. Reasonably priced and outfitted with all of the options you need for a successful hunt, the Ruger Hawkeye makes an excellent companion for the modern hunter to take into the field.
Classic Design and Modern Performance
The Ruger Hawkeye offers nothing short of a beautiful rifle that is made to get the job done right. It is made with an American Walnut stock and offered with an alloy steel /satin blued finish on the barrel. The Mauser-type feed extractor provides a positive system that ensures reliability, while the hinged, solid steel floorplate allows for easy extraction without having to chamber each cartridge. With a patented integral scope mount machined into the receiver, you have an absolutely stable surface to place the scope rings, providing better accuracy in the field. Of course, the cold hammer-forged barrel uses some of the most precise rifling available, ensuring that you can always have that consistent accuracy when it really counts.
Specifications for the Ruger Hawkeye
Like most of the rifles you would look at for hunting, the Ruger Hawkeye is offered in a variety of different calibers and barrel lengths. The .204 Ruger model offers a 5-round capacity and uses a 24” barrel. It weighs 7.2 pounds and measures out to be 44” overall. Next, the .223 Rem also has a 5-round capacity, but cuts back the barrel to 22” and the overall length to 42”. Both the .243 Win and .270 Win use a 4-round magazine and are equipped with a 22” barrel. They weigh 7 and 8 pounds respectively. The 7mm-08 Rem, .308 Win, and .30-06 Sprng all also have a 22” barrel and their weights range from 7 to 7.5 pounds. Both the 7mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mag use a 24” barrel and measure out to be 44 3/4” overall.
In addition to the standard models, the Hawkeye is also available in a compact version. These compact models all use a 16.5” barrel and measure 35.5” overall. The caliber options include: .223 Rem, .243 Win, .308 Win, and 7mm-08 Rem.
Going Beyond the Standard Model
While the standard and compact Hawkeye might offer a wide variety of different calibers to choose from, discerning shooters might also be interested in considering some of the other choices available to them. For example, the Predator configuration actually includes a two-stage, adjustable target trigger, which offers a short take-up followed by a light pull with no creep or overtravel. If that is not the right option, you might also look at the Varmint Target option, which provides this same trigger, but and offers a few different calibers to choose from.
