All of the rifles in this section are defined as Title II weapons under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (see below).

Advantages of Short-Barrel Rifles

A short barrel on a rifle, particularly combined with a folding or collapsible buttstock, can make a firearm extremely compact and maneuverable. As such, SBRs are valued for some types of defense shooting, including home defense. Short or compact rifles have become a mainstay in the practice of close quarters battle (SQB) tactics since, in confined areas (particularly inside a building or other structure), an SBR can be easily manipulated to address close threats. Their size also allows them to be more concealable, which makes it easier to store them obtrusively for ready access should the need arise. For all of these reasons, SBRs have become increasingly popular, despite the additional requirements for ownership (see below). It should be noted, however, that the accuracy and velocity of standard ammunition can be degraded by the use of shorter barrels; ballistics tables and range reports show that, beyond 100 yards or so, an SBR may not be as effective as a rifle or carbine with a longer barrel. Nonetheless, as CQB weapons, SBRs certainly have their advantages and proponents.

Title II Weapons

The purchase of an SBR requires more paperwork before purchase than is true with most rifles. Please read the following carefully before you place an order. The National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) defines a short barreled rifle as one having a barrel less than 16 inches (not including a flash suppressor, unless it is pinned or welded to the barrel) or an overall length of less than 26 inches. The Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), which amends the NFA, requires that a potential buyer fills out and submit a Federal Form 4 to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and purchase a $200.00 tax stamp (not included with the price of the firearm from Omaha Outdoors). This application has to be approved by ATF before a buyer can take possession of a Title II firearm. Some states prohibit individuals from possessing Title II weapons, while other states or counties require law enforcement approval for ownership; check with your local police department or sheriff’s office for details.
