Hunting and Foraging for Food

There will come a time when your initial supplies are exhausted and you will need to go hunting and foraging for food.

It is essential to understand where to find survival food, although it should also be remembered even food is actually the least pressing wilderness survival need.

With plenty of water and a comfortable resting place, most of us can live many weeks without food, so prioritize your actions and plan your actions around this important survival tip.

Having said that, food is of course hugely important not just for sustenance, but also for your mental and emotional state. It is also a critical source of energy and will help your to maintain a normal body temperature.

Even in a disaster situation, there should be opportunities to find various sources of natural food in the wild, you just need to know what you can and can’t eat, as one false move with a poisonous plant or animal, could have fatal consequences.

Once you know where to look and how to prepare plants you find in the wild, and what insects are fair game when it comes to food, you’ll be far better prepared.

Edible Insects

To be able to survive in the wild or when food supplies are limited, you will need to successfully identify which insects are edible, as they could represent a vital source of food.

On the Menu

The best edible insects include crickets, cicadas, and grasshoppers, and you can also add termites and ants to the menu, although these will need to be cooked first.

Moths and butterflies can be eaten and some arthropods, including scorpions and tarantulas, are also edible. It is worth remembering that virtually all aquatic insects can be eaten in both adult and larval form and are generally more palatable than their land-based relations.

Some insects like grubs, worms, leeches, and beetle larvae have a slime factor that can induce a gag reflex, so they will need to be either swallowed without chewing or alternatively, mashed into a paste and cooked crisply before being consumed.

A fair number of insects are to-go and can be eaten raw, but they are often far more agreeable after being cooked, which also helps to kill bacteria too.
